Words from Alice:
My name is Alice Langbrown. I am a 21-year old artist and jeweller based in Tamaki Makaurau.

My practice attempts to dismantle notions surrounding the fragility and preciousness of traditional jewellery by embracing the oddities and deformities that arise during experimentation. I prefer to use a slightly unorthodox material approach to jewellery making in the form of delft sand casting. This process allows one to create malleable forms within sand before metal is poured into the mould. This somewhat temperamental approach produces organic handcrafted jewellery of which no piece is ever the same.

I tend to resonate most with the rings borne from mistakes, finding beauty in serendipity. Much of the time I melt down second-hand jewellery to create new pieces. I’m inspired by the heavy history carried by found objects and, as an artist, having the agency to transform them into new objects where an unwritten narrative awaits them.

I often think about where my rings end up in the world and the conversations they engender. This is truly rewarding as a maker.

Once I have finished with a ring I utilise the silver off-cuts, recycling them to be a part of my next creation. When working with gemstones I strive to source ethically lab-grown stones to ensure that my practice remains sustainable and ethical.

I hope you enjoy my selection of works shown at Iffy.
