Tawdry is a design project by Grace and Demelza.


At the end of 2019, Tawdry set out to explore different types of craft practises and materials. During that time we developed the column candle. Inspired by the form and functionality of modernist sculpture, in contrast to the unpredictability of wax, wick and flame.

Zigzag, Curve & Bamboo were forms chosen for their geometric harmony, and aesthetic performance when burnt.

These three column candle designs were originally crafted in four-part wooden moulds, which have since evolved into silicone.

Over 12 months we experimented with various waxes, recycled and new, refining our blend for maximum burn time, luminosity and sculptural behaviour.
